Gerard Piqué was the first person to propose the 'final-four' format for the Spanish Super Cup to RFEF President Rubiales, as it would increase television rights.
Gerard Piqué and RFEF president Luis Rubiales had originally proposed the idea of playing the Spanish Super cup 'final four' in the Santiago Bernabeu or the Camp Nou.
RFEF President Luis Rubiales allied with Gerard Piqué to pressure Saudi Arabian authorities to give the pair up to €24m for hosting the Spanish Super Cup in the country.
One of Rubiales' voice messages sent to Piqué: "Geri! Congrats. And not for your great game yesterday, or your goal. It's past 12, which means that the deal with Saudi Arabia has been signed. Thanks for everything. I'm here for whatever you need. A big hug. Take care."
With the deal for the Super Cup being held in Saudi Arabia, the Spanish football federation has guaranteed a payment of €40m net every season. Along with this, RFEF president Luis Rubiales' salary has skyrocketed.
A leaked audio from Piqué: "Look Rubi. If it's a money thing, Real Madrid would accept €8m man. You can do €8m for Madrid and €8m for Barça. You can do €2m and €1m for the other two. And the federation could stay with €6m. And we can push Saudi Arabia for an extra €1-2m."
When Rubiales did not like the figures sent from Saudi, he asked for Piqué to look them over.
"Look, he is telling you that the commission does not come separately. He says that you would receive the €25m without the commissions. That the comissions would be part of the price."
In August 2019, after the leaks that the Spanish Super Cup was scheduled to be moved to a different format in Saudi Arabia, RFEF president Luis Rubiales was ready to pull out of the deal. Gerard Piqué convinced him to go ahead as planned.
Piqué's leaked audio: "Rubi, I understand your point. But think about it. If everyone sees that you were about to do it, then pull out, they will use it against you. They will say that you're no longer going to Saudi Arabia because you got caught. I would think about it."
Piqué: "It would show that you were never doing anything wrong. You understand? And it's the same people. With the same price, etc, etc. And you can say that you were not wrong."
Gerard Piqué is receiving €4m net every season from Saudi Arabia for his help in the negotiations of the Spanish Super Cup through his company Kosmos.
The contract also stipulates that the competition can be cancelled at any moment if the money is not paid to Kosmos in due time.
Before the first edition, Piqué said to Rubiales: "They said they would pay tomorrow. The thing is that they said they would only pay to you but... It would not make sense if they wouldn't pay us too. We all have to get paid. If we don't, we're not going. I need your backing."
